The Simpsons Movie has exceeded even generous estimates to top the U.S. box office, taking a massive $74,036,787 in its first three days.
This makes it the 20th biggest opening U.S. weekend in history, behind The Da Vinci Code and the 5th Harry Potter film (source).In the UK, the Simpsons flick took £13,626,853. Worldwide takings are estimated at $170m.
This result is seen as a triumph for Fox's omnipresent marketing, which included Homer opening this week's Tonight Show, dressing up loads of 7-Eleven stores as Kwik-E-Marts, and the launch of SimpsonizeMe.com, the website that allows users to automatically generate a Simpsons 'avatar' from a provided photo.
